Belonging is an essential human need—as crucial as food and water. Leaders and organizations often promote a workplace where people belong; however, the words and the reality do not always match up. I want individuals, regardless of their title or position in the organization, to know they can shape belonging for themselves and others. When I truly belong in a group, I have more energy, excitement, and passion for our shared goals. When others accept me for who I am, care for me, and respect my perspective and experience, I find it easy to provide the same in return. We create something more impactful as a group than we could ever accomplish individually. I am also aware of an epidemic of loneliness and isolation in the United States. Strong connections and relationships in which we belong to others and others belong to us are an antidote to this epidemic. They are a step toward diminishing the divisiveness that prevents us from developing practical solutions to our collective challenges and existential human dilemmas.
